"Possessing a strong mind & competent
education, he was distinguished in the various spheres he filled.
Glowing with an ardent love of his Country he served her in Revolutionary
contest as chaplain which station he also filled in the contest
with the savages & in the war of 1812. As a divine with undeviating
devotion he advocated the Doctrines of Christianity published
by Jesus Christ and His Apostles and embraced by the venerable
reformers as a Christian. For sixty years his motto was by their
fruit ye shall know them, an adherence to which exemplified in his
protracted and religious course. In his death Christianity has lost
an able advocate, Society a useful member, and the Commonwealth one
of its founders. Here moulders his body, his soul has winged its way
to God and heard the glorious welcome, well done thy good and faithful
servant, enter into the love of your Lord."
