In Memoriam : George W. Winthrop

Page 160

After a lengthy illness George Winthrop, a member of the Club for many years before moving with his wife Grace to Charleston, S. C, passed away on August 7, 1990, less than a month before his 72d birthday.

A native of this area, he was born in Bryn Mawr on September 4, 1918, a son of George W. and Edith McConnel Winthrop. He attended the Green Tree Elementary School and Tredyffrin-Easttown High School, graduating in the Class of 1937.

Following graduation he attended the Pennsylvania School Ship Academy and served in the United States Navy during the Second World War and Korean War. (Appropriately, in an early photograph taken when when he was a boy he was wearing a sailor's suit.) After his naval service he became a member of the Retired Officers Association.

Prior to his retirement in 1984 he worked as an insulation contractor for the Allied Insulation Company of Wilmington.

An active member of the Church of the Good Samaritan in Paoli, he also served as a vestryman for the Church. In addition to his activities with the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club, he was a member and volunteer at the Chester County Historical Society and a member of the Diamond Rock Old Pupils Association. His particular interests were in maritime and naval history.

He is survived by his wife Grace, their daughter Mallery, and two sisters.

As was observed in his Class Yearbook when he graduated from high school, "his pleasant disposition and cheery smile will be missed".
