In Memoriam: Elizabeth Taylor Goshorn

Page 41

On December 22, 1994, Elizabeth Goshorn died in her home after a three-and-a-half year bout with cancer, during a part of which she participated in the then-experimental taxol protocol program at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., she was the older daughter of George Francis and Lillian Helms Taylor. At the age of one her family moved to the suburban New York City area and then in 1930 to Wayne. There she attended Radnor High School and Swarthmore College before graduating in 1940 magna cum laude in chemistry from Bryn Mawr College.

After graduation she worked as a technical abstractor in the library of the Hercules Powder Company in Wilmington, but on the birth of her son retired to raise her family and become active in community activities, including the Cub Scouts, Brownies, a Girl Scout leader, the P.T.A., and other organizations.

When her children had grown up, she returned to Bryn Mawr for further academic work and then became a guide at the Academy of Natural Sciences and later in the classical section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum.

She was also a very active member of the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club. Her role as a hostess will long be remembered, and her suggestions as a member of the editorial board of the Quarterly improved it on numerous occasions. She also contributed several articles, and transcribed a number of tapes to reproduce articles for which there was no hard copy available, including Dave Wilson's article in this issue.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, with whom she lived in Daylesford since 1946; a daughter; two granddaughters and a great grandson; and a sister. She is buried at the Church of St. Peter in the Great Valley.

Each of us who knew Elizabeth died a little when she passed away; yet as long as any of us remembers her love and smile and cheerfulness and courage, her care and devotion to her family, and her thoughtfulness and concern for others she will always be with us and it will be a better place to be.
