The October trip

The field trip this month included the section around Marshallton, Chester County, a village retaining much of its 18th century charm.

Named in honor of its first citizen, Humphry Marshall, cousin of John Bartram, and himself a botanist, the arboretum started by Marshall in 1773, was visited. Stops were made at the Star Gassor's Stone, placed by Mason and Dixon in 1764, the grave of Indian Hannah, last of the Lonni-Lonapos, and the birthplace of Marshall, near Northbrook. The trip ended with a visit to Bradford Meeting, where the meetinghouse, dating back to 1765, and the old trees proved of interest.

Editor's Note: The original text speaks of the "Lonni-Lonapos", but future references have been to the "Lenni-Lenapes"; see Vol. 6, No. II, p. 39 and Vol. 6, No. IV, pp. 84, 86
