Soliloquy in an antique shop

Phoebe P. Prime

Page 24

I wonder from what jolly cupboard came
These cups, now huddled in an aimless crowd;
Or on what cozy tea table once stood
These cold and empty teapots here displayed.

Flotsam and jetsam of some family wreck
The lovely silver locked within this case
Which once upon some dining table "sat"
And lent distinction to the lesser things.

Secure within what parlor dim were placed
Those Queen Anne chairs, that stand so patiently
Awaiting for time when someone may
Take them to settle in another home.

And for what artist did this grandame sit,
Dressed in the silks and satins of her day;
And here, what treasured bit of sentiment--
This chubby baby's face, and lock of hair!

-Unclaimed and nameless they await their turn
When once again an owner they will find,
And mayhap in some Bible or old book
Their name and story come to light again.

Disturbed from "Ancient Peace" and dispossessed--
In Antique Shop or Auction room they wait
The coming of that wise and loving one,
Who, cherishing, will make them live again.
