Source: November 1947 Volume 6 Number 4, Pages 69–70 Editorial Our nation has recently awakened to the real value of historic research and the preservation of our historic documents and shrines in combatting Un-American activities. The Freedom train with historic records of the formation of our government and the many great events that have preserved it is now journeying over the entire nation awakening the sense of gratitude which we should at all times feel toward those who have given and have preserved for us a free and prosperous country. This to my mind is far more valuable than all our invectives against Fascism and Communism. Let us dwell more on the beauties of our own free system of Government and the ugliness of others will have no appeal. You remember the story of Orpheus, and the sirens that lured the sailors onto the rocks with their music. The mariners plugged their ears so that they might not hear the singing of the sirens. But Orpheus, with his lute, made music so beautiful that the sirens had no lure. And so I bid you keep on with the music of your history. Keep telling and writing of those sturdy ancestors who cleared the forests and gave us these fertile farms; of those statesmen who were ever alert to the least encroachment on their freedom; of those builders whose creations have withstood the storms of centuries and still charm us with their dignity and beauty of line; of our Courts and their history of bringing the guilty to justice and righting a million wrongs. The time spent in recording and publishing these things is time well spent to the end that our people may know their heritage and the Price of Freedom.
