"You've Got a Ghost in Pennsylvania" In its brochure to promote travel in Pennsylvania there is a section on the state's legends and lore. In it are described six ghosts. Two of them have associations with Tredyffrin and Easttown townships. The first, of course, is the spirit of Prissy Robinson, "the ghost of Blue Ball Tavern", with her nocturnal quest "for clean clothes to replace her blood-stained ones". The other is the ghost of Mad Anthony Wayne, on horseback riding through Elk County "searching for his lost bones" that were jolted from their container as his remains were being brought back from Presqu'Isle for burial at St. David's Church. With 1551 townships, 967 boroughs, and 52 cities in Pennsylvania, two out of six is a pretty good representation for this area! TopT-E Bus Driver Places 10th in National Contest Janice Harding, a bus driver for the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, placed tenth among more than 100 entrants in the National Bus Driving Safety Rodeo held in Kansas City, Missouri this summer. Miss Harding qualified for the national competition by being one of the three top drivers in the state finals held earlier at Perm State. The national rodeo is a two-day event. The drivers are quizzed on all aspects of bus safety and equipment, as well as being required to do some fancy driving. "We had to pull a 66-passenger bus through a maze of tennis balls with only one inch clearance on each side of the backwheels," Miss Harding commented. In addition, she had to make a safety check of a vehicle, in five minutes, for at least six safety defects, and was interviewed about her "philosophy" of bus driving. TopFour Generations of Volunteer Fire-Fighters When Stuart Hughes joined the Paoli Fire Company, he was the fourth generation of the Hughes family to be an active volunteer fireman in thisarea. His father, Les Hughes, has been Fire Chief of the Paoli Company since 1969, and a member of the company since 1947. The tradition was started by the late Montford Hughes, Stuart Hughes' great-grandfather, who was an active member of the Berwyn Fire Company. His son (and Stuart's grandfather) Caroll Hughes, was also a member of the Berwyn Company before moving to Paoli. Two other sons of Carol]. Hughes, Dick and Raymond, are also members of the Paoli Fire Company along with their brother and nephew. Top"The" History Club When the program for the Tricentennial Birthday Party at Hibernia Park last June was being prepared, on the material submitted to the printer, the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club was listed as the "T/E History Club". In transferring the copy to type, the "T/E" was read as "The", with the result that in the program the club was listed as "The History Club". Is any other comment necessary? |
