Source: October 1983 Volume 21 Number 4, Page 112 Foreword Eighty years ago, on Thanksgiving Day in 1903, the football elevens of Berwyn and West Chester high schools first met on the gridiron. A review of the sixty-nine game rivalry, which ended in 1974, is our first article in this issue. The cover illustration, from the program for the last game, is from the collection of football programs of Dale Fulmer, of Grove. The next article is taken from a talk given by Conrad Wilson at a recent club meeting, held in the old house on Swedesford Road; it is now the charming home of club members Pattye and Jeff Benson. Conrad Wilson, incidentally, is a charter member of the History Club. If you are not quite sure what a mangel wurtzel is, you can find out in the article on the first annual agricultural Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society, held in Paoli in October of 1823. According to Futhey and Cope's History of Chester County, this fair was also "perhaps the first exhibition held in the county". The hand-written record kept by Annie Potts Walker of each day's activities at "The Meadows", the Walker family farm, was given to the club some years ago. In this issue is a transcript of the first four months' entries; those for the balance of the first year will follow in three installments in the next three issues. The Index to Volume XXI of the Quarterly shows that nineteen different persons contributed to this year's issues. Thank you! |
