Source: January 1985 Volume 23 Number 1, Page 2 Foreword Dr. Marshall Becker, who is Professor of Anthropology at West Chester University, was also the speaker at the Club's annual banquet, held in October at the Trinity Church in Berwyn. His brief history of the Lenape in southeastern Pennsylvania is the first article in this issue. In addition, he has prepared an extensive selected bibliography of material on the Lenape, which is the next feature. Atlee Kirkner's recollections of Christmas years ago were originally written for Postscript, a periodical issued for and by the retirees of the Reuben H. Donnelley Company in Darby. A long-time resident of Tredyffrin Township, Mr. Kirkner also worked for the U. S. Postal Service for forty years. The scale and variety of the agricultural operations on the 600-acre Chesterbrook Farm in the late nineteenth century are reflected in Anne H. Cook's compilation of contemporary reports on the farm, from the West Chester Daily Local News. A. J. Cassatt's Chesterbrook Farm was an internationally known showplace stock farm. The Bard, mentioned on page 21, incidentally, was the winner of the Preakness at Pimlico in 1886! Also in this issue is an article of the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road Company, Its turnpike between Philadelphis and Lancaster was the first major turnpike in the United States, and ran through both Tredyffrin and Easttown townships. |
