In August a lawn party was held at the historic DuPortail house, and the anniversary was also celebrated at the Club's annual banquet at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Berwyn in October. A special guest at the August meeting was Ruth Moore Styer, one of the sixteen charter members of the Club. She now lives in Kennett Square. Also helping us celebrate at the DuPortail house were State Representative Peter Vroon and his wife Isabelle; Dr. George Garwood, Superintendent of Schools, and his wife Norma; Jane Davidson, Chester County Preservation officer, representing the County Commissioners; John Kane, chairman of the Easttown Township Planning Commission; William Phair, chairman of the Willistown Township Historical Committee; and representatives from the Radnor Historical Society and the Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area. On behalf of the County Commissioners, Jane Davidson presented a proclamation, signed by each of the Commissioners, noting that "the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club has made significant and meaningful contributions to the body of knowledge of local history amd has enhanced an appreciation of the two townships for everyone who lives there" and saluting its "fifty years of commitment and accomplishment". Through its president, Leighton Haney, the Club also expressed its appreciation to Bob Goshorn "for his outstanding service to the Tredyffrin-Easttown History Club on the occasion of its 50th anniversary", and presented a suitably inscribed copy of the book on Chester County postcards to him. Appropriately, there were fifty-one advance registrations for the annual banquet, or, as Leighton Haney observed, "one for each year and one to grow on". TopNew Books by Local Authors Two recent books by local authorities have received national attention. In August the first of three volumes on the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower, by his grandson, David Eisenhower, was published. It is entitled Eisenhower at War, 1943-1945, with the focus, as the author notes in his introduction, "on the political aspects" of Eisenhower's job while he was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. At about the same time, Julie Nixon Eisenhower's book about her mother, Pat Nixon, the Untold Story, also appeared. The book was described in the press as a "revealing, heart-rending and sensitive story of her mother's life". The Eisenhowers, with their children, live in Daylesford. TopClub Coordinates School Night Course Thirty-five persons registered for a course on local history, offered at Conestoga High School this past fall by the Main Line School Night Association. Entitled "Looking Back: the Development of the Upper Main Line", the ten-week course was coordinated by the History Club. The speakers, in addition to Club members Grace Winthrop, Bob Ward, and Bob Goshorn, included Dr. Marshall Becker, chairman of the Anthropology Department at West Chester University, Ann Woodward, site administrator for Brandywine Battlefield Park, and Jack McCarthy, County Archivist. The course will also be offered by the School Night Association in this spring's catalog of courses. |
