Source: April 1987 Volume 25 Number 2, Page 40 Foreword In 1786, although not without considerable controversy, the county seat and court house for Chester County were removed from Chester to "near the Turk's Head" (now West Chester). Last November ceremonies were held at the Court House commemorating the 200th anniversary of the first court sessions in the new county seat. In our first article in this issue are the presentations made on that occasion. The information for them was prepared by Laurie Rofini, Barbara Weir, and Lynn Catanese, of the County Archives staff, under the direction of Jack McCarthy, the County Archivist. We thank them for permission to include this material here. Next is a transcription of the program of one of our Club's meetings last fall, at which club members and guests recalled the various vendors who came to the door selling their wares or services and other men "who came around". Bob Goshorn's biography of Dr. George G, Groff was presented at a meeting of the Club earlier this year. And on January 11, 1987 St. Monica's in Berwyn observed its 90th anniversary as a separate parish with a special Mass, celebrated by the Very Reverend Joseph Duffey, Provincial of the Augustinian Fathers. To mark the occasion, our concluding article is taken from a history of St. Monica's parish prepared by Thomas G. Cavanagh for its 75th anniversary in 1972 and brought up-to-date by Dorothy Way. |
