Source: January 1988 Volume 26 Number 1, Pages 19–24 A Portfolio of Old Bill Forms The accounting system used at Chesterbrook Farm was quite elaborate. For each invoice received, a voucher was made out showing the date, the name of the supplier, the period covered by the invoice, the amount, the date of payment, the cheque number, and the phase of the operation to which the expenditure was to be charged. After payment, the receipted invoice was attached to the voucher and filed. When the farm was bought for the Chesterbrook development, there were a number of these records in what had been the farm manager's office, in a mass of trash strewn over the floor by vandals. The bill forms on the following pages, used by five Berwyn businesses 75 years or so ago, were rescued from the litter before the building was torn down. Karl Lichtenfeld started his business in Berwyn in about 1902. After a few years, his "The Bee Hive" was located in a building he erected at the southwest corner of Church [now Main] Avenue and the Lancaster Pike. The town drug store, located at the southwest corner of Knox Avenue and the pike, was operated by Clara Aiken, the wife of Dr. James Aiken, in the early part of the 20th century. Later it was purchased and run by Frank Walker and his wife, both of whom were registered pharmacists. Henry Garber's store -- it was really two stores with a doorway joining them -- was on the south side of the pike about midway between Knox and Waterloo avenues. In the eastern half of the store he sold cigars and tobacco; in the other side, newspapers, magazines, school supplies, penny candies, and so forth. Hoffman's Bakery, known for its cream puffs, bread and rolls, and other confections, was at the southwest corner of the pike and Waterloo Avenue. Next door to the west was the grocery store of Hall & Hibberd. The store was run by Mr. Hibberd, while Mr. Hall went around to their customers in a horse-drawn wagon, taking orders and delivering them the next day. |
