Being a Tory during the Revolutionary War was not without its problems. Some of the hardships the Tories faced are recited in our first article, in which Anne Cook presents a transcription of the "memorial" filed by a Richard Swanwick to claim compensation for losses he suffered as a result of his loyalty and support of the Crown during the war.

Our next article is the second of the series on the general history of the public schools in Tredyffrin and Easttown townships. The author was a member of the School Board for many years. The article was presented at the June meeting of the club, in the restored chapel and first church building of the Paoli Presbyterian Church.

Traces of the old iron deposits in our two townships are now virtually obliterated. Hob Borgson's article on the iron mines of a century and more ago is based largely on newspaper clippings in the Chester County Historical Society.

That 1989 was the 125th anniversary of the last full year of the Civil War has been surprisingly overlooked this year. In the last article in this issue, Barbara Fry reports the activities of local volunteers from Tredyffrin and Easttown during that last year. They are not, as she points out, the stories of "great and powerful leaders", but, rather, those of" the sacrifices of ordinary men ... who did the job at hand as best it could be done".

Also included in this issue is the Index for Volume XXVII.
