Source: January 1990 Volume 28 Number 1, Page 2 Foreword A number of club members have contributed to this issue, as shown by the listing in the Table of Contents. It was 212 years ago that the poorly trained troops of the American army spent the winter encamped at Valley Forge, and the following June emerged a disciplined fighting force. During that winter several of the officers were our neighbors, quartered in farm houses in the Great Valley in Tredyffrin. Fourteen of these houses, many of them still private homes, are still standing. This past summer the Club made a tour of these generals' quarters, with different club members reporting briefly on the general who was quartered there. These reports comprise the first article in this issue, "Some Distinguished Neighbors." Our meeting in September was held at the restored Chapel /Library, moved in 1986 from Darby Road in Paoli to the grounds of the Paoli Presbyterian Church on South Valley Road. The program at the meeting included the articles by Barbara Fry, Mimi Lang, the librarian at the Paoli Library, and Bill Riggs, who was chairman of the committee that arranged for the move and restoration of the structure. Their presentations comprise the next feature. Our last feature is the third in our series of reproductions of some of the old bill forms salvaged from the farm manager's office at Chesterbrook Farm. They recall some of the grocery stores and meat markets in our area three-quarters of a century ago. Cover illustration by Henry McNeil |
