Source: April 1991 Volume 29 Number 2, Page 42 Foreword All three articles in this issue are adapted from programs presented at club meetings during the past six months. Herb Fry's history of American Stores Company and Acme Markets was given at the February meeting. The author, a member of the club, is a former American Stores executive. He joined Acme Markets in 1969 as comptroller, and in 1987 was named Senior Vice-President/Finance for American Super Stores, Inc. He retired last year, and is now at work on a book about midget automobile racing at the Bloomsburg Fair. The article on our public schools during the first half of this century was the program for last November's meeting. It is the third in a series on the history of our schools, with earlier programs and articles on our schools before the Public School Act and on our public schools during the nineteenth century. Finally, the article on "the many William Penns" was presented by Ben Thomas at the annual club banquet last fall. (By coincidence, the banquet was held on the 346th anniversary of Penn's birth.) Ben Thomas is an active volunteer at Pennsbury Manor, Penn's estate on the Delaware River near Morrisville, Pennsylvania. |
