In the early part of this century the Coates brothers, William, Henry, and Joseph, owned well over 100 acres in Easttown Township south and west of Berwyn. At our April meeting Herb Fry traced the history of this family that, perhaps not actively but passively, played a key role in the history of the village. His presentation is the first article in this issue.

And it appears, after our March meeting, that our History Club is also quite musical -- or at least that many of our members in their youth were exposed to music lessons, with varying degrees of success. Our next feature is a transcription of that meeting, in which club members remembered piano lessons -- and other cultural adventures and misadventures. The transcription was made by Herb and Barbara Fry.

In his recollections of Berwyn in the 1920s, in the July 1988 issue of the Quarterly, George Moran noted, "It was our family ritual on Sunday, after church, to stop at Garber's and pick up the Sunday paper and a bag of Sensation for my dad, and then to drop down to the ice house and pick up 25 pounds of ice for our ice box." In our next feature Henry O. Garber's grandson, "Zeke" Pyle, reminisces about his grandfather and his store. His recollections were presented at our May meeting.

And finally, in our concluding feature, we note that traffic and the problem of automobiles speeding through our area are not new, but go back to the first decade of the 1900s.
