Source: January 2000 Volume 38 Number 1, Page 2 Foreword The history of Strafford Station and its surrounding neighborhood was displayed on a summer evening last August when the Tredyffrin Township Historical and Architectural Review Board hosted a "Town Tour & Village Walk," part of the 5th Annual Chester County summer series. James B. Garrison, AIA, a resident of Strafford and a member of HARB, presented a review of this history and the architectural significance of some of the houses in the neighborhood to the History Club at its November meeting. His remarks are included here as the first article. Tredyffrin resident and friend of the History Club, John E. Legg served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a crew member on a B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber which took part in nineteen missions over Europe. He survived when his plane was shot down over Germany on May 24, 1944, but faced nearly a year as a prisoner of war until liberated by US troops. His experiences as a POW are recorded in our second feature. A "Hall of Heroes" memorial dedicated to service men from Chester County who lost their lives in World War II was unveiled on November 7, 2000 in the West Chester courthouse following the annual Veterans Day parade. Club member Herb Fry has identified the local veterans included on the memorial and names them (and a few others who were omitted) in our last article.
