In Memoriam: Halsey Frank Stanley

Page 145

History Club member Halsey Frank Stanley, a life long resident of the Upper Main Line, died on June 12, 2000, one day short of his 81st birthday. He was born in Devon and later moved with his parents to Berwyn. He attended school in the lower grades at Strafford and Berwyn, and graduated from Tredyffrin Easttown High School in 1938.

Frank was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1940 to 1945. He married Dorothy Marron of Malvern on December 19, 1943, during Sunday morning church service at East Whiteland Presbyterian Church (today's Covenant Presbyterian), while en route to Europe. Overseas he joined a Quartermaster unit, and his letters from there to the Berwyn Post often appeared in print.

He retired from the U. S. Postal Service in Paoli after working there almost 30 years. At Covenant Presbyterian Church, he was an elder, and served as wedding sexton until just before his death. He joined Paoli Lodge #290, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in January of 1946. From 1976-1977 he was Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Pennsylvania, and he was picked as Chester County's Odd Fellow of the Year in 1977. He collected lodge buttons, and with artistic talent translated replicas of them into works of art.

Frank joined the History Club in 1996. He enjoyed sharing recollections about events in his life. One of his letters from overseas was published in the January issue of the Quarterly this year. Frank is survived by his wife Dorothy and a son Bob of Fort Pierce, Florida. He will be missed.
