A New Library for the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club

Herb Fry

Page 99

The new library of the Tredyffrin Easttown History Club has been cataloged, shelved and is now available for use at the Club Archives located in the east end of the second floor of the Tredyffrin Easttown School District Educational Services Center, 738 First Avenue, Berwyn (next door to the Easttown Library). It is a reference library, not a circulating library, and is available for use under these rules:

1. Both members and non-members of the Club may use the library at the time regularly scheduled for use of the Club Archives (9 to 11 a.m. the first Monday of the month) .

2. The library can be made available at other times by contacting the Club Librarian for an appointment.

3. All users will register their name in a log book at the Library provided for the purpose.

4. Occasionally, a written request for use of a book outside the library will be honored but carefully monitored. This privilege will be restricted to those members researching or writing for the Club Quarterly, and shall be for no longer than two weeks duration.

The new library was made possible through a generous gift of Bob Goshorn's books by his daughter Megan Goshorn Fruchter after his death in

Page 100

1995. Subsequently, we have also received other important gifts. We are indebted to Sue Andrews, Jack Ansley, Ed Buck, Peggy Egertson, Mary Ives, Mary Lamborn, Nancy Pusey, Frank Stanley, Libby Weaver and the Congregation of St. Isaac Jogues Church for their generosity.

A few books were part of History Club records and papers passed on from hand to hand by members over the years, but the substance of an earlier Club library was given to Freedoms Foundation in 1973. A listing of the books comprising that first library was published in the Quarterly in November of 1953 (Vol. 8, No 1, pp. 23-25). At that time the library was housed in a small building described as "Dr. Hannah Croasdale's School Building," made available as a Club headquarters by Mary Okie Croasdale.

The arrangement sufficed for a time, but problems with security developed. After an act of vandalism, when windows were broken and books and papers were scattered about, the books were removed from those quarters. A Library Committee was appointed to study the situation. The Committee chaired by Howard S. Okie, Librarian, presented a formal written report on June 22, 1 961 that suggested, since Conrad Wilson was teaching a course in American Heritage there, that the Club consider some sort of cooperative venture with Conestoga High School. The books were loaned to Conestoga for the year 1960-1961. Toward the end of 1963 they were returned to the club and lodged at the Wandless home on Warren avenue.

Club President Myrtle Wandless, daughter of the late Franklin Wandless and Quarterly editor Fannie Wandless, died on January 1, 1968. Her aged mother continued to occupy the home. In 1971, the need to do something with the books and other papers was recognized and a discussion took place which was recorded in the Club minutes. A listing was made of the books in Mrs. Wandless' basement, and the club entered into conversations with Freedoms Foundation librarian Sandra Williams about accepting some or all of them into the Foundation Library at Valley Forge. The May 24, 1973 minutes of the Club record that about 1/3 of the collection had been placed on "permanent loan" at Freedoms Foundation.

Many Club members helped to make the new library a reality. Libby Weaver unpacked the boxes of books and recorded preliminary information on a set of cards. Barbara Fry worked tirelessly sorting and cataloging the collection. Peggy Egertson finalized the index and prepared the typed listing which appears on the succeeding pages. We invite all interested persons to make use of this fine collection of books.
