She was the widow of Charles E. Lee. Both of the Lees were reliable historians, with accurate recall of Berwyn life earlier in the century. Merle was 85 years old at the time of her death. She was born in 1914 with her twin sister Mildred Walker Jones. The twins were the youngest of six children of Agnes and Frank Walker. Both parents were pharmacists, and the rollicking story of growing up in the Berwyn Pharmacy on Lancaster Avenue was told by Merle and her sister Mildred in a Quarterly article (Vol. XXXII, No. 4, October 1994). As children, the young Walkers were well aware of the service and care their parents gave to the Berwyn community. They grew to adulthood with the same traits. Merle went to work for the Tredyffrin Easttown School District when her children, Charles and Mildred, were grown. In her position as secretary in the Conestoga High School guidance office, she graciously welcomed students and parents alike into that important location for planning high school programs and future careers. In retirement, Merle worked on projects benefiting the needy at her church, Trinity Presbyterian. She was a member and past matron of the Eastern Star; she volunteered with RSVP; and was an organizing member of the 3Ts, a club for Tredyffrin Easttown graduates active since 1931. We say farewell to Merle with gratitude for her full and meaningful life. |
