IN MEMORIAM: Betty Jane Wieder Haney

Page 73

The Historical Society has lost a true friend. Betty Haney, a member for almost three decades, died February 24, 2006, at Paoli Hospital. She was 82. Leighton, her husband of 62 years, is a past president of the Society, and together they gave a high priority to participation at all our meetings.

Betty was born and grew up in Allentown, graduated from Allentown High School, and was a member of the class of 1945 at Ursinus College. She met and married Leighton, and in December 1958, they and their 3 young boys settled on Evergreen Lane in Berwyn.

She was a member and deacon of Trinity Presbyterian Church and in recent years attended Newtown Square Presbyterian Church where she also served as deacon. In addition to her responsibilities as wife, mother, and homemaker, Betty volunteered at the Chester County Historical Society, the Easttown Library, Surrey Services in its formative years, Meals on Wheels, and The Trading Post of the Fox Chase Cancer Center.

A memorial service celebrating Betty's life was held on April 8 at Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. An inscription on the back of a remembrance booklet succinctly characterizes Betty's time with us: "The way we live our days is the way we live our lives." – Annie Dillard.
