The Philadelphia Folk Festival

The first annual Philadelphia Folk Festival was held on the farm of Colket Wilson in 1962, just south of Swedesford Road. It included workshops, seminars, contests, dances, and a concert. 2,500 people are estimated to have attended. In 1963 the attendance had increased to 3,000, and to 15,000 in 1964.

The last year the Festival was held locally was in 1965. By this time it had become too successful to be accommodated at the farm. The township withdrew the zoning variance that allowed the Festival to be staged, and that was the end of its run. The Festival moved to Schwenksville, where it continues to be staged.
