Then & Now: 15 Years of Aerial Photography over the Upper Main Line
presented by Roger Thorne
The Paoli passenger station and its environs, separated by 12 years: (Top) from October 2012, the Station Square Office Park overshadows the small station; (Lower) from May 2024, the new Paoli Transportation Center and the Airdrie apartments.
In the fall of 2009, former TEHS president Roger Thorne began a project to re-photograph many of the images of Upper Main Line locations originally shot during the 1920s–30s by the Dallin Aerial Survey Company and Aero Service Corporation. With the invaluable help of many generous collaborators, and the use of a WWII-era open-cockpit aircraft, this effort has recorded not only many changes from the “old days,” but also some of the relentless change which had continued over the last decade and a half. Come prepared to revisit some familiar places from a new perspective.
Roger Thorne, his wife Carol, and their children relocated from the Chicago area to the Great Valley in 1983. After retiring from a career in executive leadership with an international services company, he joined the small Tredyffrin Easttown History Club in 2003. Roger was soon chosen to lead that organization, a position he held for a decade. Roger continues to be active with the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society, researching local history and writing extensively.
